Welcome
Welcome to this years Scouts in Action Month -
Scientific Scouts in Action. Here
is your opportunitiy to explore the sciences, physics, space, chemistry and earth sciences.
There is plenty of scope for some amazing programs this year and your Group will be able to hook
up with local organisations that will visit and demonstrate some pretty amazing
stuff.
Science is all around us and it is really cool and
there are lots of badges your Joyes, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers can earn whilst having
fun learning about how stuff works.
Making slime,
elephants toohpaste, a mentos fountain are just a couple of the experiments you can take part in
and that is just half the fun, figuring out what is actually happening and understanding the
science behind it all is the other half!
This is the 9th year of Scouts in Action and we
have almost reached 200,000 participants since 2010 and this year we will easily reach that
target but Scouts in Action relies on you spreading the word throughout your Group, District,
Region etc. Spread the word about this years theme and get everyone being part of Scouts
in Action Month 2018.
Keep visiting the SiAM
web site for updates, programs and other resources that will be rolled out as we hurtle towards
August.

Kingaroy Joey Scouts (Queensland)
Tonight the Joey's met Mad Magpie the scientist. They took part in
experiments learning about speed, vibration, sound and chemical reactions. One experiment dealt
with creating carbon dioxide by combining bicarb soda with vinegar. They then poured the carbon
dioxide gas over the candle flame to extinguish it by starving it from oxygen.

Withcott in Queensland
For Scouts in Action
Month Withcott Cub Scout Pack went to the Cobb and Co. Museum in Toowoomba for the Curiouser and
Curiouser Alice In Wonderland Themed Science Show.
There were hand-on
activities where the Cub Scouts learnt to program and fly drones, create holograms, saw the
relationship between different sea creatures bacteria, watched a Science show which included
some tricks they can do at home and saw the effects of liquid nitrogen on balloons and many
other activities. We spent three wonderful fun filled hours at the Museum where they were
entertained and amazed by a magician – still have no idea how she turned one small red sponge
ball into a heart shaped sponge, sampled chocolate and bubble juice! Seeing the smiles on their
faces as they were shown some new trick or learnt something new made this night out and Scouts
in Action Month well worth it. Some of us even had Alice In Wonderland characters airbrushed
onto our arms! He did say they come off after a few day washing with soap and
water!
